Students alter distribution of pore sizes in school garden soil and observe the effects of irrigation or rainfall on water infiltration/capture, runoff rate, and/or water ponding.

Students simulate rain and wind to observe the effects of water erosion and wind erosion on soil.

Students explore various factors that influence the amount of runoff that occurs when rain falls on the landscape by simulating erosion by water.

Students will demonstrate rain drop splash (splash erosion) and determine its impact on bare soil, ultimately being able to identify types of erosion.

Students determine the water holding and draining capacities of different soils and will investigate how organic matter increases the amount of water soil will hold.

In this activity, students investigate three different soil samples with varying moisture content. They use a soil moisture probe to determine the percentage (by volume) of water in each of the soil samples.
