Think of all the things we need most for daily living: food, clothing, shelter, water. Have you ever considered how each of them, in turn, depends on soil—that without soil, in fact, there would be no life? Soil science is applied chemistry, biology, and physics, and a great way to teach core concepts while getting your hands dirty!

Scientists with the Soil Science Society of America developed a one-day in-service program were we "dug" into some of the core concepts discussed in our Know Soil Know Life book and educators guide and demonstrated some hands-on activities for the classroom. This is the page for the content and links for the In-Service Guide.

View the webinar presented in November, 2023 about the in-service project for SSSA members.

This project and the materials that have been developed are made possible with the support of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). USDA-NRCS partners with SSSA to engage with educators at all levels to bring the message of the value of soils to students of all ages. They also focus on conservation solutions to protect our environment while sustaining the economic viability of working lands.
