Think of all the things we need most for daily living: food, clothing, shelter, water. Have you ever considered how each of them, in turn, depends on soil—that without soil, in fact, there would be no life? Know Soil Know Life is a soil science textbook and educator’s guide curriculum targeting high school students. Soil science is applied chemistry, biology, and physics, and a great way to teach core concepts while getting your hands dirty!
In this one-day in-service, we "dug" into some of the core concepts discussed in the book and demonstrated some hands-on activities for the classroom. This is the page for the content and links for the In-Service Guide.

This project and the materials that have been developed are made possible with the support of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). USDA-NRCS partners with SSSA to engage with educators at all levels to bring the message of the value of soils to students of all ages. They also focus on conservation solutions to protect our environment while sustaining the economic viability of working lands.
